Nine year old Lily Edwards from Horley was singled out from over SIX HUNDRED gymnasts to be awarded Springfit Gym Club’s coveted Fay Greene trophy for progress in gymnastics.
One individual from any of the club’s twenty six local gymnastics classes is chosen, based on who has shown the most overall progress in the last year. All Head Coaches at the club decide who deserves the recognition, considering levels of dedication, achievement, competition, attitude and performance amongst other important skills taught in this hugely beneficial sport.
The trophy was presented to the club back in 1998 by the parents of Fay Greene; a talented gymnast who was so enthusiastic about the sport that her family wanted her passion to live on through the club after Fay’s tragic death at an early age. This has certainly been achieved, as Lily’s Mum explained; “Lily loves gymnastics and is very dedicated. I think all that Springfit has done for her is fantastic and we have become a true advocate for the club and all it represents.”
The award came as a pleasant surprise to Lily who was aware of the ability of other members in her advanced class and the stiff competition alongside her. Achieving a gold medal in a very talented group of children competing in the club’s Floor and Vault competition a year ago certainly helped her stand out.
A steely determination in her attitude towards training has also been rewarded by becoming the most recent name engraved on the impressive trophy, and Lily’s enthusiasm for gymnastics will surely now grow further, along with her confidence in the coming months.
